Standing advisory body to cover all sports organization elections
The Korea Sports Council, led by President Yoo Seung-min, said it held the inauguration ceremony and first meeting of its Election Advisory Committee on Thursday at the Olympic Hall annex in Songpa-gu, Seoul.
Established at the 15th board of directors meeting in May, the committee will advise on key matters related to elections for the Korea Sports Council president, regional sports council presidents and member federation heads. It will also provide standing expert guidance on drafting and revising related rules and regulations, as well as on prohibited conduct, disciplinary measures and major issues arising in individual elections.
The 10-member committee, chaired by Kim Dae-nyeon, former secretary-general of the National Election Commission, draws on experts from the fields of elections, law, academia and sports administration, and will serve until July 2029. Kim previously chaired the election management committee for the 41st and 42nd Korea Sports Council presidential elections, giving him broad experience in both public and sports organization elections.
At Thursday's meeting, the committee received a briefing on the status of election support for sports organizations this year, elected a vice chair and formed two subcommittees. The subcommittees will operate separately — one covering commissioned elections and the other self-administered elections — to deliver swift, specialized advice tailored to the characteristics and management methods of each sports organization.
The committee also deliberated on and adopted advisory opinions on proposed reforms to the Korea Sports Council presidential election system. It reviewed recommended guidelines for election management rules governing city, provincial, county and district sports council presidential elections, ahead of the third round of directly elected regional sports council president elections scheduled for December, aiming to ensure fair, smooth administration and consistent electoral procedures.
"I hope the committee members will pool their wisdom and experience to strengthen the fairness, representativeness and public trust in sports organization elections," President Yoo said.
Committee Chair Kim said he would "offer balanced advisory opinions that faithfully uphold the fundamental principles of elections while giving full consideration to the unique characteristics and on-the-ground conditions of sports organization elections."
