Dongdaemun-gu in Seoul held a progress briefing for the "Wangsan-ro Street of Light" project at Cheongnyangni Station plaza on June 23, reviewing the current status of the initiative.
Wangsan-ro takes its name from the pen name of Wangsan Heo Wi, who led the anti-Japanese righteous militia movement in the late Joseon era. The road stretches from Sinseol-dong Station to Cheongnyangni Station plaza, serving as a major transit corridor in Dongdaemun-gu and a historically significant space embodying the spirit of independence and patriotism.
The district is carrying out the project to bring the militia spirit of Heo Wi — and the symbolic image of the torches that once lit the resistance — into today's urban landscape. The focus goes beyond simply installing lights: the project aims to highlight Wangsan-ro's historical symbolism while enhancing the overall image of the Cheongnyangni area.
Media installations, pedestrian gobo lights and landscape lighting will be set up along the project corridor. The district is pushing to complete construction by July, and officials expect the finished project to improve the nighttime pedestrian environment around Cheongnyangni Station plaza while further elevating Wangsan-ro's symbolic profile.
The project is being carried out through a public-private partnership. The Seoul Metropolitan Government, Hanwha Connect and Lotte department store, among other institutions and private companies, joined consultations after expressing support for the project's aims. The district has been coordinating among the parties to raise the quality of the final outcome.
The district plans to push through the finishing stages so that the Wangsan-ro Street of Light can become a space where residents enjoy history, culture and nighttime scenery together. The district intends to develop the street so that commuters and local residents using Cheongnyangni Station can naturally encounter the meaning of Wangsan-ro and feel a sense of Dongdaemun-gu's identity.
"The Wangsan-ro Street of Light project carries forward the noble militia spirit of Wangsan Heo Wi and the value of independence as light for today," a district official said. "We will see this through with care to the end, so that the meaning of the torches the righteous militia once held aloft can shine on as a light illuminating Dongdaemun-gu's future."
The official added, "As this project is being carried out through the cooperation of many institutions and private companies, we are grateful to our partners — the Seoul Metropolitan Government, Hanwha Connect, Lotte department store and others who lent their support. We will do our best to make Wangsan-ro a new nighttime landmark in Dongdaemun-gu, one that holds both historical depth and urban vitality."
