Myeong Gye-nam, Hwanghae Province governor, declares 29 million won in assets

Myeong Gye-nam, an actor appointed Hwanghae Province governor in March, has declared assets of 29 million won ($18,900).

According to senior officials' asset registration data published in the official gazette by the Government Public Service Ethics Committee on Friday, Myeong declared total assets of 29,295,000 won.

The top item on his asset list is a 2018 passenger vehicle valued at 14.55 million won. He also declared 9.98 million won in bank deposits in his own name and 4.76 million won in cash and shares held by his eldest son.

The Hwanghae Province governor is one of five governors of the northern provinces. The president appoints the role on the recommendation of the interior minister, with no fixed term of office.

At the time of his appointment, the Ministry of Interior and Safety said it had determined Myeong was suited for the role, noting that the five northern province governors are typically drawn from prominent figures among displaced persons or North Korean defectors, and that his father was a displaced person originally from Gaeseong.

Among the Ministry of Interior and Safety's Grade 1 directors included in this round of asset disclosures, Song Gyeong-ju, director general of the Local Finance and Economy Bureau, declared 2.7 billion won; Kim Ju-i, director general of the Planning and Coordination Bureau, declared 2.1 billion won; and Hwang Gyu-cheol, director general of the AI Government Bureau, declared 2.6 billion won.

Song holds an apartment in Amsa-dong, Gangdong-gu, Seoul, jointly owned with his spouse and valued at 733 million won. He previously held an apartment in Eojin-dong, Sejong, valued at 397 million won, which he sold in April. His declared deposits totaled 1.76 billion won, comprising 960.98 million won in his spouse's name, 722.33 million won in his own name, and 73.44 million won in the names of his eldest son and daughter.

Kim declared real estate totaling 1.6 billion won, including an apartment in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province, valued at 520 million won and a jeonse lease on an apartment in Jongno-gu, Seoul, valued at 1.05 billion won. He also declared 771.14 million won in deposits and land in Hongseong, South Chungcheong Province, valued at 87.39 million won.

Hwang declared land in the Boryeong area of South Chungcheong Province valued at 1.32 billion won, an apartment in Bangbae-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, jointly owned with his spouse and valued at 1.62 billion won, a jeonse lease on an apartment in Yeoksam-dong, Gangnam-gu valued at 500 million won, and family deposits — including his own — totaling 758.6 million won. He also declared total debts of 1.95 billion won, including 350 million won in private debt in his own name.
