Artists from five disciplines present solo and group exhibitions in relay format under a single theme — admission is free, offering residents and tourists alike a fresh arts experience
Jongno-gu, led by District Mayor Jung Mun-heon, will host "Hitchhikers' Society," a relay exhibition by the sixth cohort of residents at Jamunbak Art Residency, at the Bukchon Exhibition Hall from July 10 through Sept. 30 — an 11-week run.
Jamunbak Art Residency is a creative platform that opened in September 2020, drawing on the rich cultural and artistic resources of the Pyeongchang-dong and Buam-dong areas. The district has recruited emerging artists aged 19 and older who live or work in the area, providing studio space and development programs to support their growth. The five artists selected in February as the sixth cohort are currently completing a capacity-building program through December that includes mentoring and exhibition opportunities.
The exhibition brings together works spanning dance, composition and sound art, media art, installation, and painting.
Dancer Lee Ji-hyeon opens the relay from July 10 to 21. Im Hyeong-seop follows with composition and sound art from July 24 through Aug. 2. Kim Hae-in presents media art that responds to audience reactions from Aug. 7 to 16. Kim Jun-seo mounts an exhibition combining installation, kinetic art, and video from Aug. 21 through Sept. 6, and Kang Ho-seong paints from personal experience from Sept. 11 to 20.
The relay closes with a group exhibition from Sept. 22 to 30, in which the sixth-cohort artists present collaborative works in archival format, crossing boundaries between their respective disciplines.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. throughout the run, with Mondays closed. Admission is free.
Jongno-gu expects the exhibition to offer a distinctive arts experience for both local residents and tourists visiting Bukchon.
"We have created a stage where talented Jongno artists can freely express their world," District Mayor Jung said. "I hope residents and tourists alike will stroll through Bukchon and fully enjoy the appeal of contemporary art."
