LG Uplus offers up to 45% discount for AI service subscribers paying via phone billing

LG Uplus is running a promotion offering up to 45 percent off for customers who pay for generative AI service subscriptions through phone billing on the Google Play Store.

The company said Friday the discount applies to customers who use phone billing on the Google Play Store to pay for subscriptions to ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Grok. The promotion runs through July 7.

During the promotional period, customers who select "LGU+ payment" on the Google Play Store to pay their monthly subscription fee and then register on the event page can receive up to 45 percent off, with a maximum discount of 5,000 won.

The discount is not deducted at the time of payment but applied as a billing credit. Customers can confirm whether the discount has been applied through their telecommunications bill in August.

Payment methods, screen layouts, discount conditions and detailed terms may vary by AI service.

Phone billing allows customers to pay using only their phone number, without entering a card number or separate account credentials. LG Uplus said the service offers convenience by enabling content purchases without complex authentication steps. Because card information does not need to be entered or stored, it also reduces the risk of exposing personal data during online transactions, the company said.

LG Uplus also said that because charges are consolidated under the "content usage fee" section of the telecommunications bill, customers can review all their subscription activity in one place. This makes it easier to track spending, and the service is available to customers who do not have a credit card or have limited access to one.

LG Uplus currently supports phone billing across a range of content platforms beyond the Google Play Store, including the Apple App Store, Netflix, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, Xbox Game Store and Spotify.

The company said it designed the promotion to ease the cost of subscribing to generative AI services amid rapidly growing demand, while also expanding the use of phone-based payment. It said particular attention was paid to customers who pay for multiple AI services separately, with the goal of delivering both discount benefits and payment convenience at once.

"As AI services spread into everyday life, subscription costs and payment convenience are becoming increasingly important factors," said Ahn Byeong-gyeong, head of AI business at LG Uplus. "We plan to continue expanding a payment environment that customers can use with ease, along with meaningful cost-saving benefits."
