Secures Platinum medal — awarded to top 1% of companies — from EcoVadis; retains No. 1 ranking among global shipping lines in Sustainalytics risk assessment for third straight year
HMM announced Friday it has achieved top-tier ratings from two major global ESG (environmental, social and governance) assessment bodies — EcoVadis and Sustainalytics — demonstrating its commitment to sustainable management.
The South Korean shipping company earned the Platinum medal in EcoVadis' 2026 assessment for the third consecutive year. The France-based rating agency awards the Platinum distinction exclusively to companies in the top 1% of its global rankings.
EcoVadis evaluates more than 100,000 companies worldwide across four categories — environment, labor and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement — and assigns medals at four tiers: Platinum (top 1%), Gold (top 5%), Silver (top 15%) and Bronze (top 35%).
HMM scored 91 out of 100 in this year's assessment, up from 87 the previous year. In addition to its existing strength in the environment category (95 points), the company improved its ethics score after obtaining ISO 37001 anti-bribery management system certification, achieving scores within the top 1% across all categories.
HMM also retained its Low Risk rating in the Sustainalytics ESG risk assessment by Morningstar — a key investment metric for institutional investors globally — maintaining its No. 1 ranking among global shipping lines for the third consecutive year.
Sustainalytics evaluates companies across seven categories including corporate governance, greenhouse gas emissions, business ethics, and occupational health and safety, classifying ESG risk into five tiers, with lower scores indicating less risk.
HMM recorded a score of 12.7 this year, an improvement from 13.6 the previous year, and received Negligible or Low Risk ratings — the two highest tiers — in most of the seven assessment categories.
"Maintaining the highest ratings for three consecutive years in both globally recognized ESG assessments, with record-best scores, is a deeply meaningful result," an HMM official said. "We will continue to make substantive efforts to firmly embed ESG management throughout the company."
Meanwhile, HMM recently received an AA rating — the highest level among global shipping lines — in MSCI's 2026 ESG assessment.
