Cash compensation announced for Friday's Toss POS payment outage

Toss Place, a subsidiary of Toss, announced a compensation plan for a payment outage that hit its store management and payment system, Toss POS, on Friday, offering to pay merchants 110% of their estimated sales losses in cash.
Toss Place announced the comprehensive plan Sunday through a notice on its official website. The outage first struck Toss POS on Friday morning, and a surge of retry requests later caused additional system strain at some merchant locations in the afternoon.
After announcing its initial compensation policy following the first outage, Toss Place said it also finalized detailed guidelines Saturday afternoon to protect affected merchants.
In the notice, Toss Place said it would cover the full estimated sales losses incurred by merchants nationwide and add a 10% goodwill payment as an apology, bringing the total cash payout to 110%. The company added that it had refined its calculation criteria to minimize gaps in coverage and account for the varying operating conditions of individual stores.
For the morning outage, estimated losses align directly with prior sales figures since system access was fully blocked. For the afternoon, the degree of impact varied by store, so the company said it would base compensation on each merchant's actual estimated loss regardless of the time of day or type of disruption. To that end, it expanded the reference benchmark to average sales over the preceding three weeks.
In addition, Toss Place said it would provide a flat 50,000 won ($32) to newly opened merchants with no comparable sales data, and guarantee a minimum of 10,000 won to stores whose estimated losses fall below that amount.
Merchants can apply for compensation starting Monday via text message or KakaoTalk notification, with applications accepted through July 16. Payouts will be made in cash within two business days of submission.
"We will do our utmost to prevent a recurrence by introducing a payment mode that operates independently of server or external infrastructure conditions, in addition to providing meaningful, tangible loss compensation for our merchants," Toss Place said.
As of late March, Toss POS had been installed at approximately 300,000 stores nationwide.
