Non-automatic weighing scales used in commerce subject to mandatory biennial inspection under the Act on Metrology; inspections run through July 21
District touring dong community centers and customer service centers in Sinsa-dong and Sinwon-dong, focusing on structural and error checks
Gwanak-gu is conducting a periodic inspection of commercial weighing scales through July 21, aiming to establish fair trade practices and strengthen trust between consumers and sellers. District Mayor Park Jun-hee is leading the initiative.
The inspection is a legally mandated biennial check under Article 30 of the Act on Metrology. It covers non-automatic weighing scales used in commerce, including platform scales under 10 metric tons, dial and plate-indicating scales, and electronic indicating scales.
Inspections focus on structural checks and error assessments, with officials verifying whether scales have been tampered with and whether measurement errors exceed permissible limits. Scales that pass receive an official inspection certificate. Those that fail must be taken out of service immediately and undergo repairs before a re-inspection.
The district completed inspections across nine dong in the Bongcheon area starting June 15 and plans to tour 12 dong community centers in the Sillim area through July 14. In Sinsa-dong and Sinwon-dong, inspections will be held at customer service centers inside local markets.
Inspections run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays, excluding weekends and public holidays. Business owners who cannot attend their scheduled dong inspection may visit a neighboring dong's inspection session instead.
For scales fixed to a building or land and cannot be moved, or for businesses with a large number of scales requiring on-site inspection, a separate four-day on-site inspection period will run from July 15 to July 21 at the location of the scales.
Businesses that use scales that have not passed the periodic inspection may face a fine of up to 2 million won ($1,290) under Article 76 of the Act on Metrology.
"Fair commerce begins with accurate measurement," district Mayor Park said. "I urge residents and business owners to participate actively and cooperate so we can build a more trustworthy trading environment for everyone in the district."
