100 spots for windsurfing, 350 for leisure canoeing, July 20–Aug. 7; windsurfing registration opens today, canoeing from July 20, both via the Gangdong-gu district office website
Seoul's Gangdong-gu district will run a 'Summer Water Sports Experience Class' from July 20 to Aug. 7 at Ttukseom Windsurfing Center and Misa Gyeongjeong Park, district Mayor Lee Su-hee announced.
The program is designed to give residents easy access to water sports close to the city. Participants can try a range of activities — windsurfing, paddleboarding, kayaking and leisure canoeing — as part of a healthy summer leisure offering.
The windsurfing class runs July 20–30 at Ttukseom Windsurfing Center and is open to Gangdong-gu residents in middle school first grade or above. The district is recruiting 100 participants in total — 20 per session across five sessions. Participants can also try paddleboarding and kayaking on the Han River.
The leisure canoeing class runs Aug. 3–7 at Misa Gyeongjeong Park. Linked to the community outreach work of the Gangdong-gu district office's canoe team, the program has competitive athletes directly coaching participants on paddling technique. It is open to Gangdong-gu residents in elementary school third grade or above, with 350 spots available — 35 per session across 10 sessions.
If applications for either program exceed capacity, participants will be selected by computerized lottery and notified individually.
In addition, the district plans to offer free special lessons in partnership with local children's centers for children who have fewer opportunities to try such activities.
Safety measures will also be strengthened. The district will conduct a safety briefing for all participants before each session and enforce safety rules throughout. The district will also arrange group accident insurance for all participants to ensure a safe experience.
Registration for the windsurfing class runs today through July 3; registration for the leisure canoeing class opens July 20 and closes July 24. Residents can apply online through the Gangdong-gu district office website.
"I hope this water sports program becomes a special summer memory for our residents," district Mayor Lee said. "We will do our best in preparation and operations so that participants can enjoy water sports safely."
