Daejeon opens temporary access road to Yuseong transit hub

Daejeon city announced Tuesday that it has completed the access road project for the Yuseong Metropolitan Complex Transfer Center and will open the route Wednesday.

The project was undertaken to relieve chronic traffic congestion around Hyeonchungwon-ro, Yuseong IC, the Guam Bridge intersection and Guam Station junction. The new road stretches 580 meters and carries three lanes of two-way traffic.

The road directly connects the Yuseong IC intersection–Baksan-ro segment — part of the Yuseong BRT corridor linking Oesamdong to Yuseong Bus Terminal, which opened in October 2025 — with the road in front of the Dagaon youth housing complex in Guam-dong.

To bridge the gap, the city used an existing but unused span — Guam Bridge — running beneath the Honam Expressway branch line. However, the bridge's structure limits clearance to 3 meters, barring large vehicles from passing.

The city expects the temporary road to divert more than 20 percent of traffic from the Guam Bridge intersection area and improve travel speeds by about 30 percent. After the opening, the city plans to analyze the vehicle-distribution effect in detail before routing BRT lines B2 and B4 toward the Guam Bridge intersection, with the aim of building a seamless regional transit transfer system connecting intercity buses, BRT and urban rail at Yuseong Bus Terminal.

In addition, the city plans to pursue a grade-separation project at the junction in front of Yuseong Saengmyeong High School to expand the main arterial corridor linking the city's outskirts to the urban core. By separating traffic heading into the Dunsan city center from vehicles remaining in the Yuseong area, the city aims to fundamentally resolve congestion around Yuseong IC.

Nam Si-deok, Daejeon's transportation director, said the temporary road was being opened first to ease the daily commute congestion residents face until the full project is completed in 2030. "We will also make sure the Honam branch-line underpass on the Yuseong BRT connector road and the Guam intersection grade-separation project are finished on schedule by 2030, so we can dramatically improve the transportation network in the city's northwestern areas," he said.
