RE100 achieved at Europe, North America and India plants
Used-battery recycling, hydrogen ecosystem strategy unveiled
Future risk management strengthened, including just transition
Hyundai Motor said Monday it has published its "2026 Hyundai Motor Sustainability Report," outlining the company's risk management capabilities and sustainable management strategy in response to tightening global environmental, social and governance regulations.
Hyundai Motor has published an annual sustainability report since 2003, disclosing both financial and non-financial information. This year's report covers the company's response to an industry in transition — driven by electrification and the spread of AI — and is organized into three sections: environment, social and governance.
The environment section highlights the company's renewable energy expansion, including the achievement of RE100 across all plants in Europe, North America and India, and a 147-megawatt solar power purchase agreement that Hyundai Motor Group Metaplant America signed.
The section also covers advances in used-battery recycling systems, biodiversity risk management aligned with Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures guidelines, the development of an integrated hydrogen value chain, and a next-generation electrification strategy.
The social section highlights 16 vehicle models earning top safety ratings — Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+ — from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, as well as the establishment of a "2030 Safety Management Strategy" and plans to expand safety investment. The section also covers "just transition" initiatives supporting employee redeployment and skills development in response to job changes brought on by electrification and the spread of AI.
The governance section covers the introduction of a lead independent director system, efforts to strengthen board diversity and independence through the appointment of female and foreign directors, a value-up program targeting a total shareholder return ratio of at least 35 percent from 2025 to 2027, and plans to build an AI governance framework for the ethical use of technology.
For the first time this year, Hyundai Motor also published an abridged version summarizing the report's key content. The company said the condensed edition was designed to improve accessibility by making it easier for readers to find information on climate change response, sustainable supply chain management and major ESG achievements.
"We have transparently captured our substantive risk management capabilities and implementation progress in line with the global trend toward mandatory ESG disclosure," a Hyundai Motor official said. "We will work to ensure that a wide range of stakeholders can connect with Hyundai Motor's ESG journey through the summary highlighting our key achievements."
Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor earlier received the "Carbon Management Honors Club" award in the climate change response category and the grand prize in the water management category at the 2025 CDP Korea Awards, held in March at Ambassador Seoul Pullman Hotel. CDP is an international initiative led by global financial institutions that comprehensively evaluates major companies' capacity to address environmental issues each year and releases results across eight rating tiers.
