Yongin Mayor Lee Sang-il, credited with single-handedly halting a plan to relocate a semiconductor factory from the city, will be officially inaugurated Wednesday.
Lee will hold his inauguration ceremony at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Yongin Poeun Art Hall, where he will formally declare the launch of "Citizen-Built Future Yongin Renaissance Season 2" under the ninth term of civilian-elected local government.
The ceremony marks the first re-election of a mayor in Yongin's history and is intended to present a four-year vision built on the achievements of Lee's first term.
Community members, representatives of local organizations and institutions, and residents are expected to attend. Lee plans to outline his governing priorities and future vision for Yongin during the event.
The city rented Yongin Poeun Art Hall to cut costs that would otherwise have gone toward constructing a temporary stage, equipment and staffing at a dedicated venue. The event was planned with an emphasis on substance, featuring performances by citizen participants.
Performances at the ceremony will be staged by the Yongin City Choir, the Yongin Boys and Girls Choir, Little Yongin and the Citizen Dance Academy.
The total cost of the inauguration covers only small-ticket items such as invitation printing.
The city had initially planned to invest a substantial budget in the event — including erecting a large stage, in line with the elaborate inauguration ceremonies common in major cities — but Lee, upon being briefed on the plan, ordered that the ceremony be prepared at minimum cost, prompting a revision.
The ceremony's relatively late start time of 5 p.m. reflects Lee's schedule earlier that day: he will begin his first official day of the ninth term before dawn, joining sanitation workers on a cleanup run and then visiting the semiconductor national industrial complex and general industrial complex sites. At 5:30 a.m., Lee will help collect household waste alongside sanitation workers in the Dongbaek-dong area of Giheung-gu.
He will then share breakfast with the sanitation workers to express his gratitude and hear about any difficulties or concerns they face. Lee will afterward head to City Hall, where his first official act of the ninth term will be to sign the "Comprehensive Plan for Fostering Yongin's Semiconductor Industry and Establishing a Cluster," a document outlining support for the city's large-scale semiconductor projects. He will then visit the Advanced System Semiconductor Cluster national industrial complex site in Idong and Namsa-eup, as well as the Yongin Semiconductor Cluster general industrial complex site in Wonsam-myeon.
