US job openings held above market expectations in May, pointing to continued strength in labor demand.
The US Department of Labor's Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, released June 30 (local time), showed job openings stood at about 7.6 million in May, roughly unchanged from the previous month.
That was the highest reading since May 2024, when openings reached about 7.78 million, and surpassed the Dow Jones consensus forecast of about 7.3 million.
A rise of 71,000 openings in the wholesale trade sector contributed to the overall improvement.
Earlier, a sharp drop in job openings in February had fueled concerns on Wall Street about a weakening labor market, but conditions have surprised to the upside since March, showing unexpected resilience.
Financial markets are now closely watching the June employment report, due July 2, to see whether the US labor market's stability has continued.
