Starting at 22,000 won a month
New service aims to ease 'streamflation' burden of juggling multiple OTT subscriptions
Dedicated home screen on launch; content viewable on up to four mobile devices
SK Broadband has unveiled a new subscription product that bundles 255 live channels, the latest popular films, terrestrial broadcasts and general programming channels for around 20,000 won ($13) a month.
The company announced Tuesday the launch of "B tv+ max," an upgraded version of its existing monthly subscription product "B tv+" that adds content from the three major terrestrial broadcasters.
B tv+ max is an all-in-one subscription service offering more than 300,000 domestic and international titles — spanning content from KBS, MBC and SBS, four general programming channels, cable, films, children's programming, animation and documentaries — along with all 255 live channels available on B tv. The service builds on the existing VOD monthly subscription by adding terrestrial broadcast content, which the company said ranks among the most in-demand among its customers.
SK Broadband said B tv+ max is designed to work best when paired with an OTT service focused on original content, and that the combination should deliver maximum value for subscribers. The product addresses the growing financial strain of "streamflation" — the cost burden of subscribing to multiple OTT platforms to access all desired content.
When the TV is switched on, B tv+ max connects directly to a dedicated home screen, improving convenience for customers. Content watched on TV can also be streamed on up to four mobile devices through the B tv app.
Priced at just 6,600 won more than the existing live-channel plan (B tv All), B tv+ max is available at 22,000 won per month — a discount of up to 78 percent compared with subscribing to the components separately — under a three-year contract combined with an internet and SK Telecom mobile plan. Subscribers also receive a 2,000-won monthly discount on YouTube Premium. The standalone IPTV price is 25,300 won per month; the internet-bundled plan is 23,100 won per month.
To mark the launch, SK Broadband is running a promotional campaign through late September offering prizes by lottery to new subscribers, including a Korean Air gift card worth 1 million won ($651) for one winner, Lotte Hotel accommodation vouchers for five winners, Lotte World free-admission passes for 30 winners, and Twosome Place coffee coupons for 2,000 winners.
"This is a complete subscription product designed to eliminate the inconvenience and cost of overlapping OTT subscriptions and deliver all the content customers want in one place," said Park Cham-sol, SK Broadband's head of platform. "We will continue to do our best to maximize the content experience for our customers and develop B tv+ max into a leading content platform."
Meanwhile, SK Broadband has been steadily strengthening its IPTV service, having topped the Korea National Customer Satisfaction Index in the IPTV category for 16 consecutive years, as surveyed by the Korea Productivity Center.
