Kumho E&C wins 224.9 billion won Gwacheon sewage treatment modernization project

Kumho Engineering & Construction announced Tuesday that it has won the 224.9 billion won ($145 million) Gwacheon public sewage treatment facility modernization project, commissioned by the Korea Environment Corporation.

The project involves building a new underground sewage treatment facility and modernizing existing infrastructure in the Gwacheon-dong area of Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province. Kumho Engineering & Construction will serve as the lead company with a 40 percent stake, forming a consortium with Taeyoung Engineering & Construction, Kolon Global Corporation, Hwangyeong Energy Solution and Uho Construction. The project is scheduled for completion in 2031.

Once complete, the facility will have a daily treatment capacity of 61,000 tons of sewage. A 30-ton human waste pre-treatment facility and a 75-ton integrated biogas facility will also be built as part of the project.

The project aims to address the increase in wastewater expected from development of the Gwacheon and Gwacheon Juam public housing districts, while improving the treatment efficiency of aging sewage infrastructure.

The sewage treatment facility will be built underground, with a park and community amenities planned for the surface above to improve the urban environment and enhance convenience for local residents.

Kumho Engineering & Construction has built expertise in environmental infrastructure through the construction of various facilities, including wastewater treatment and water purification plants. The company has continued to win contracts in the environmental turnkey market, most recently securing a scale-up project for the Gongchon sewage treatment facility in Cheongna International City.
