Co-host Mexico beats Ecuador to reach round of 16

Mexico, buoyed by home-ground advantage, advanced to the round of 16 at the 2026 North, Central America and Caribbean World Cup on Tuesday, ending 40 years of heartbreak in tournament play.

Mexico defeated Ecuador 2-0 in the round of 32 at Estadio Ciudad de México in Mexico City, with Julian Quiñones contributing a goal and an assist and Raul Jimenez adding a second.

The victory sent Mexico into the round of 16 for the first time since the 2018 Russia World Cup, eight years ago. It was also Mexico's first win in World Cup knockout play since the 1986 tournament on home soil, when the team reached the quarterfinals — its best-ever finish. A 2-0 victory over Bulgaria in the round of 16 that year had been Mexico's only win across 10 World Cup knockout matches over the following four decades.

Mexico had reached the round of 16 in seven consecutive tournaments from the 1994 United States World Cup through the 2018 Russia edition, but never advanced further. The team failed to qualify for the 1990 Italy World Cup and was eliminated in the group stage at the 2022 Qatar tournament.

Mexico topped Group A in the co-hosted tournament with three wins from three matches — nine points, six goals scored and none conceded — including a 1-0 victory over South Korea in the group stage. The win over Ecuador extended their clean-sheet run through the tournament.

Mexico will face the winner of the England-Democratic Republic of Congo match on July 6 at the same venue for a place in the quarterfinals.

Of Mexico's five matches through the round of 16, four were played at Estadio Ciudad de México, with only their second group-stage match against South Korea held at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara — a clear benefit of co-hosting the tournament.

The match kicked off an hour late due to severe weather and lightning risk near the stadium, and Mexico pressed hard from the opening whistle. In the 22nd minute, Roberto Alvarado played a lofted ball from the left side of his own half into the space behind Ecuador's defense. Quiñones collected it, beat a defender inside the left of the penalty area and drove a right-footed shot into the net.

It was Quiñones' third goal of the tournament. The Al-Qadsiah forward had won the Saudi Pro League golden boot in the 2025-2026 season with 33 goals.

Mexico extended their lead in the 31st minute. Jimenez intercepted a clearance, threaded a pass through Ecuador's packed defense to Quiñones, received it back and fired a right-footed shot into the net from the center of the penalty area.

Ecuador pushed hard afterward but could not breach Mexico's goal, which had remained unbeaten throughout the tournament. Deep into stoppage time, Ecuador defender Piero Hincapie was shown a red card and sent off after he was caught covering his mouth while speaking near Mexico's Santiago Jimenez — a violation under a rule applied for the first time at this tournament.
