SK hynix tops job-seeker charts as bonus bonanza fuels 'Hynix exam' craze

SK hynix is drawing strong interest from job seekers, topping the rankings for corporate profile views in the first half of this year as expectations of a semiconductor industry recovery converge with the prospect of outsized performance bonuses.

According to company profile data released Monday by job platform Catch, operated by Jinhaksa, SK hynix recorded 253,000 corporate profile views in the first half of 2026 — a 79 percent increase from the same period last year. Its job postings drew roughly 880,000 views, the most of any company on the platform.

Two main drivers account for the surge in interest: improving semiconductor market conditions and a revamped bonus structure. In September last year, SK hynix reached a labor-management agreement abolishing the previous 1,000 percent cap on base salary bonuses and establishing a new profit-sharing system that allocates 10 percent of the prior year's operating profit to an excess-profit distribution pool.

Financial data provider FnGuide put the average analyst consensus for SK hynix's operating profit this year at 269 trillion won ($174 billion). A rough calculation based on a workforce of approximately 35,000 employees suggests average per-person bonuses before tax could reach around 700 million won.

Average employee pay has also jumped sharply. SK hynix's mean annual salary per employee last year was 185 million won, up 58.1 percent from 117 million won the year before. Samsung Electronics posted an average of 158 million won, though that figure covers all divisions — including mobile and home appliances — making a direct comparison with SK hynix's semiconductor-focused workforce difficult.

The improved compensation has reshaped the mood in the job market. When SK hynix recently posted openings for production-line workers, the term "Hynix exam" — likening the application process to a competitive national exam — began circulating online. Because eligibility was limited to high school and junior college graduates, some online communities even shared tips on how to change one's listed highest academic credential from a four-year university degree to a high school diploma.

Hyundai Motor Company ranked second in corporate profile views with 56,000, followed by Hanwha Aerospace in third with 42,000. Samsung Electronics and Hyundai Mobis tied for fourth at 36,000 views each, with SK Siltron (35,000), LIG D&A (32,000), SL (27,000), Hanwha Systems and APR (26,000 each) rounding out the top 10.

Three of the top 10 companies — Hanwha Aerospace, LIG D&A and Hanwha Systems — were defense firms, reflecting job-seeker interest driven by expectations of expansion in South Korean defense exports and rising global security demand.

Defense-related job postings on the Catch platform numbered 620 in the first half of 2025 and 507 in the second half, before climbing to 700 in the first half of this year — a 13 percent increase from the same period a year earlier.

"Job seekers are increasingly factoring in not just a company's name recognition but also industry outlook, growth potential and compensation competitiveness when making their choices," said Kim Jeong-hyeon, head of Catch at Jinhaksa. "Corporate profile views were especially active in sectors like semiconductors and defense, where recovery expectations are high and hiring demand is growing."

The phenomenon has spawned new slang in South Korea. "Hynix exam" has entered everyday usage to describe the fierce competition for jobs at the chipmaker, while a new coinage blending SK hynix into the existing shorthand for the country's most coveted career paths — medicine, dentistry, traditional Korean medicine, pharmacy and veterinary science — has also gained traction online. Industry observers say that if talent continues to concentrate at companies offering high pay and strong growth prospects, competition among firms to secure skilled workers will only intensify.
