Daegu education chief takes office, vows to build 'global education capital'

Kang Eun-hee was inaugurated as Daegu superintendent of education Tuesday at the Daegu Student Culture Center, officially beginning her term in office.

In her inaugural address, Kang said she would "build on eight years of education reform to develop Daegu into a global education capital that draws the world's attention."

She said she would strengthen student-centered education — including social-emotional learning and school violence prevention — to support the holistic development of all students and ensure foundational academic achievement. She also said she would introduce the Korean Baccalaureate (KB), building on the results of the International Baccalaureate program, and push forward AI-based education along with reforms to future-oriented teaching and assessment.

Kang added that she would work to narrow educational gaps between regions, create future-ready learning environments, and expand special education, early childhood education and career education to give every student equal access to learning opportunities.

"Together with the education community, we will nurture global leaders and create a Daegu education where students can proudly say, 'I learned here in Daegu,'" she said.

Meanwhile, before the inauguration ceremony, Kang made Sinseong Elementary School her first official stop of the day, where she inspected school meal ingredients and joined a traffic safety volunteer activity along the school commute route — signaling the start of a field-focused approach to education administration with student safety as its top priority.
