Nam Han-kwon launches 9th elected-term tenure as Ulleung-gun chief, unveils 10 strategies for 'Ulleung 2040' vision

Nam Han-kwon was inaugurated as Ulleung-gun chief on Tuesday, immediately laying out his governance vision and a medium-to-long-term development strategy for the island county.

For his first official engagement that day, Nam joined sanitation workers in a cleanup activity, listening to their on-the-ground concerns.

At a regular staff briefing, he set "delivering change and results that residents can feel" as his core goal. He then held a press conference to announce his governance vision and 55 key campaign pledges across eight policy areas for the next four years.

The eight areas cover building a cradle-to-grave care system, transitioning to clean energy, overhauling transportation, expanding community infrastructure, improving living conditions, advancing the agriculture and fisheries sectors, promoting eco-tourism, and strengthening administrative systems.

Nam also presented 10 strategic priorities under the "Ulleung 2040" long-term vision, which includes an energy transition and the establishment of a national arboretum on the island.

In the afternoon, he hosted an inaugural courtesy meeting for the 9th elected term, inviting the Ulleung-gun chapter of the Korea Senior Citizens Association and heads of local senior centers to hear a range of views from elderly residents.

Nam then attended a ceremony marking the administrative zone renaming of Jeodong-ri — formerly Dodong 3-ri — joining residents in celebrating the village's reclamation of the name "Jeodong" after 111 years.

At a subsequent county governance forum, Nam and members of the 10th Ulleung-gun Council exchanged views on the direction of the new administration and pressing local issues, agreeing to maintain close cooperation and communication.

"I will push forward all 55 campaign pledges without a hitch to bring about change that residents can truly feel," Nam said. "Building on the achievements of the 8th elected term, I will steadily lay the groundwork to prepare Ulleung for the next 100 years and create a county where all residents can be happy."
