Shark sightings off Gangneung prompt emergency alerts, safety warnings

Multiple shark sightings have been reported off the coast of Gangneung in Gangwon Province, prompting authorities to urge caution.

According to the Gangneung Coast Guard, a fishing vessel operating in waters east of Gyeongpo Beach reported a shark sighting at around 2:03 p.m. Friday.

A separate sighting was then reported in waters about 4 kilometers east of Anmok Beach.

In response, Gangneung city sent an emergency text alert at around 4:51 p.m. Friday, urging residents and visitors to "take care of your safety during marine leisure and swimming activities."

The Gangneung Coast Guard also asked nearby leisure businesses and fishing vessels to exercise extra caution following the reports.

Beaches in the Gangneung area were also asked to broadcast safety warnings over public address systems in response to the sightings.

The coast guard additionally ordered coastal rescue boats and patrol vessels stationed at shore substations to step up patrols and safety operations.

Meanwhile, the shark sightings came on the same day Gyeongpo Beach held its first official opening ceremony of the season, marking the start of its summer beach season.
