Geumcheon-gu has completed the transformation of Sangiŭp Park in Siheung 4-dong into a "climate-resilient park" equipped to handle extreme weather events including heat waves, cold snaps and fine dust, the district announced.
The project was launched to provide residents with a safe and comfortable green space within their neighborhood where they can relax amid increasingly volatile climate conditions.
Sangiŭp Park, an 8,412-square-meter green space nestled at the foot of Mokgolsan, has long been a favorite spot for walking and leisure thanks to its dense foliage and natural scenery. The district preserved the existing natural environment as much as possible while adding climate-adaptive facilities and recreational spaces, giving the park a fresh look that residents can enjoy with confidence regardless of the weather.
New installations include a rainwater retention yard that collects runoff for use in lawn maintenance, a water-cooler terrace and cooling fog system to lower the perceived temperature, and a pedestrian deck and smart rest shelters accessible to all. The district also improved overall accessibility and convenience so that children, senior citizens and people with disabilities can use the park more safely and comfortably.
The district made a particular effort to incorporate resident feedback throughout the planning process. After holding multiple public information sessions to gather input from park users and nearby residents, the district changed the originally planned water playground to a ground-level fountain based on that feedback.
The newly created water feature includes a whale-shaped jumping fountain and other installations, offering children an engaging play experience while giving all visitors a cool, refreshing atmosphere and a place to unwind.
Building on the park's completion, the district plans to continue expanding and maintaining climate-adaptive facilities and natural rest spaces close to where residents live. A neighborhood-oriented park is also under development in the nearby Mokgol district of Siheung 4-dong, with completion targeted for this year.
"Climate change has become a challenge that everyone feels in their daily lives, which makes it all the more important to create an environment where residents can rest safely and comfortably at a park near their home," said Geumcheon-gu District Mayor Choi Gi-chan. "We will continue to expand green spaces that proactively address climate change and improve the quality of life for our residents."
