Rain to sweep across South Korea on Monday as monsoon season begins

Rain will fall across much of South Korea on Monday.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration, Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong Province, North Chungcheong Province, Gwangju, South Jeolla Province and North Jeolla Province can expect 20 to 60 millimeters of rainfall Monday.

The five West Sea islands are forecast to receive 10 to 40 mm, the eastern coast of Gangwon Province 5 to 20 mm, and the inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province along with Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province 5 to 50 mm.

In areas where rain falls, some locations could see intense bursts of around 20 mm per hour.

Morning lows are forecast at 20 to 24 C, with afternoon highs reaching 26 to 32 C. The heat index is expected to climb to around 32 C, particularly in inland areas of the south, while other regions will also feel muggy with apparent temperatures hovering around 31 C.

On Tuesday, rain will continue mainly in the central regions, with showers also possible at times on Jeju Island and in the southern parts of the country.

Forecast rainfall for Tuesday calls for 20 to 60 mm in Seoul, Incheon, Gyeonggi Province, the five West Sea islands, the inland and mountainous areas of Gangwon Province, Daejeon, Sejong, South Chungcheong Province and North Chungcheong Province. The eastern coast of Gangwon Province is expected to receive 5 to 30 mm; North Jeolla Province and the northwestern inland areas of North Gyeongsang Province, 10 to 40 mm; Gwangju, South Jeolla Province, the inland areas of South Gyeongsang Province and the rest of Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, 5 to 20 mm; and Jeju Island, less than 5 mm.
