Gyeongju resort's 'slow mailbox' sends 7,510 postcards in first half of this year

The North Gyeongsang Province Cultural Tourism Corporation said Monday that the "slow mailbox" at the Bomun Tourism Complex in Gyeongju dispatched a total of 7,510 postcards in the first half of this year.

Of the 7,264 postcards sent domestically, the Gyeongsang region accounted for the largest share, followed by Gyeonggi Province and Incheon, Seoul, and the Chungcheong provinces.

Another 246 postcards were sent abroad, reaching destinations including Taiwan, the United States, Singapore, Peru, France, Germany, Turkey and Israel.

Now in its 12th year, the slow mailbox is an experiential program in which tourists write postcards during their visit; the cards are held for a set period before being mailed to recipients.

Visitors can fill the postcards — which feature Gyeongju landmarks such as Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond and Lake Bomun — with memories from their trip.

"The slow mailbox is more than a simple postcard-sending service — it is an emotional experience that stores travel memories and lets you revisit them later," said Kim Nam-il, president of the corporation. "We hope the postcards delivered across the country and overseas serve as a warm, lingering reminder of a cherished journey for the people who receive them."
