Daejeon to build third natural burial site at city memorial park

Daejeon has announced the start of construction on a third natural burial site at Daejeon Memorial Park to meet growing demand for natural interment.

The city said Sunday it is moving forward with the project, beginning with the launch of a construction management and supervision contract.

The existing natural burial areas at Daejeon Memorial Park are nearing capacity, making new plots necessary. The project will develop 24,000 natural burial plots across a 49,500-square-meter site.

To ensure residents who wish to use natural burial services can do so without delay, the city plans to accelerate the construction schedule. It will complete an initial 800 plots by the end of this year before proceeding in phases to finish the entire project by 2027.

Once complete, the project is expected to promote eco-friendly funeral culture, expand residents' burial options, create a more comfortable memorial environment and improve citizen welfare.

"The third natural burial site is a meaningful project that reflects the diverse funeral culture needs of our residents," a city official said. "We will continue to do our best to create a convenient and accessible burial environment for citizens."
