GS E&C partnership to advance construction-site automation robot development
Autonomous driving technology proven in agriculture to expand into construction, manufacturing and logistics
Daedong Robotics, the AI robot affiliate of Daedong Group, has raised 5 billion won ($3.25 million) in Series A funding from corporate venture capital arms linked to GS Engineering & Construction and Posco Holdings. The company plans to use the capital to extend its autonomous driving and spatial-recognition technology — developed and proven in agricultural settings — into construction, manufacturing and logistics.
Daedong Robotics said Sunday that three investors participated in the round: Xplore Investment, a CVC affiliated with GS Engineering & Construction; Posco Technology Investment, a CVC under Posco Holdings; and NAU IB Capital. The total investment is 5 billion won.
The funding carries strategic weight beyond a purely financial investment, with an eye toward real-world industrial deployment. Daedong Robotics has steadily expanded its robot lineup from autonomous agricultural transport robots to mowing and pest-control machines. The company now aims to push into unstructured work environments in construction, manufacturing and logistics.
Xplore Investment's participation is tied directly to construction-site automation robot development. Daedong Robotics signed an MOU with GS Engineering & Construction in June for cooperation on construction-site automation and smart construction technology. The company plans to use this investment as a springboard to define specific robot collaboration projects for construction sites.
Posco Technology Investment focused on the potential to expand into manufacturing and logistics environments. Daedong Robotics is advancing what it calls "indoor-outdoor hybrid autonomous driving" technology, which allows robots to navigate independently between interior and exterior workspaces. The company intends to develop this capability into a logistics automation solution for large-scale manufacturing facilities.
Construction and manufacturing sites are widely regarded as prime unstructured industrial environments for robot commercialization. Unlike warehouses, where routes and working conditions are relatively standardized, construction and agricultural sites see terrain, obstacles and task conditions change constantly. Deploying robots in such settings requires simultaneous mastery of autonomous driving, obstacle recognition, remote monitoring and off-road mobility.
Daedong Robotics will direct the proceeds toward advancing its AI field robot business, mass-producing new robots and expanding industrial-site demonstrations. Building on autonomous driving, spatial recognition and monitoring technology validated in agricultural settings, the company will broaden its agricultural robot lineup — including mowing and pest-control models — while extending its reach into robots for construction, manufacturing and logistics.
Over the medium to long term, the company also plans to evolve into a robot-as-a-service (RaaS) platform business. The model would generate recurring service revenue by leveraging autonomous driving, monitoring and operational data collected in the field. Through this shift, Daedong Robotics aims to transform from a robot manufacturer into an AI field robot platform company.
Daedong Robotics was established in October 2024 as Daedong Group's dedicated AI field robot company. Its core technologies include indoor-outdoor hybrid autonomous driving, vision AI-based perception for unstructured environments, and an off-road driving platform. The company has also laid the groundwork for agricultural robot commercialization by obtaining South Korea's first certification for an autonomous agricultural transport robot.
"We will contribute to creating safer workplaces by deploying AI field robots — built on an off-road autonomous driving platform validated in real-world environments — to replace dangerous and repetitive tasks in agriculture, construction and manufacturing," CEO Kang Seong-cheol said. "We will accelerate robot commercialization by leveraging Daedong Group's full-stack robot capabilities, spanning physical AI, hardware design, development, demonstration, and manufacturing and mass production."
