Matt Damon, Charlize Theron and Nolan to visit Seoul in 'historic' promotional trip

Director Christopher Nolan, actor Matt Damon and actor Charlize Theron are set to visit South Korea to meet local fans — marking the first trip to the country for both Nolan and Theron.

Universal Pictures confirmed Monday that Nolan will travel to Seoul to promote "Odyssey," which is scheduled to open next month. Nolan has drawn more than 36 million admissions in South Korea alone through films including "Interstellar" (2014), "Dunkirk" (2017), "Tenet" (2020) and "Oppenheimer" (2023), making him one of the most beloved directors among Korean moviegoers.

In a handwritten letter announcing his visit, Nolan expressed gratitude to Korean fans for their support. "I am deeply grateful for the love and encouragement Korean fans have shown my films," he wrote. "It is especially meaningful to be coming to Seoul with 'Odyssey,' and I am truly delighted to present this film in person to audiences in Korea."

The Seoul visit came at Nolan's own initiative, according to people familiar with the matter. The director personally coordinated his schedule, saying he was determined to meet fans in South Korea and introduce the film there in person.

Damon, who plays Odysseus, and Theron, who plays Calypso, have also confirmed their participation, completing what is being called a historic promotional lineup.

The visit will be Damon's first trip to South Korea in 10 years, since his 2016 visit for "Jason Bourne." Theron has been spotted in Seoul and elsewhere in the country on informal tourism trips, but this will be her first official promotional visit.

"Odyssey" opens in theaters Aug. 5.
