Hyundai's robot dog Spot waves US flag at America's 250th anniversary celebrations

Spot, the robot dog made by Boston Dynamics — a robotics subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group — was seen waving an American flag at celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Boston Dynamics posted a photo on its official social media accounts Saturday (local time) showing Spot brandishing a US flag, accompanied by the message "Happy 250th Birthday, America."

At the anniversary celebrations held that day, Spot was deployed on patrol duty to help ensure the safety of attendees.

Spot has also been deployed to patrol venues for the FIFA 2026 World Cup in North and Central America.

FIFA's security team has taken delivery of four Spot units, which are conducting autonomous patrols and monitoring at key sites including the Dallas International Broadcast Center and MetLife Stadium in the New York-New Jersey area.

Meanwhile, Hyundai Motor Group is moving to acquire the remaining stake in Boston Dynamics and bring it under full ownership.

The acquisition target is the roughly 9.6 percent stake held by SoftBank, with the deal valued at approximately $325 million. Once completed, Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Euisun Chung and group affiliates would hold 100 percent of Boston Dynamics.

The current ownership structure is understood to be: Hyundai Motor 28 percent, Chairman Chung 22.6 percent, Kia 17.2 percent, Hyundai Mobis 11.3 percent, Hyundai Glovis 11.25 percent and SoftBank 9.65 percent.
