Russia launches massive drone, missile strike on Kyiv, killing at least 5

Russia launched a massive drone and missile strike on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv in the early hours of Monday (local time), killing at least five people, according to AP and other international news agencies.

Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv's military administration, said on Telegram that a residential building in the Podilskyi district had partially collapsed as a result of the Russian attack.

Several high-rise buildings in the Darnytsia district were also damaged, Tkachenko said, adding that rescue operations were underway as residents may be trapped under rubble.

The strike came just hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned of a possible large-scale Russian attack. AP said Russia deployed ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones in the assault.

Russia has recently been targeting Kyiv with large-scale strikes in retaliation for Ukrainian precision attacks on Russian oil refineries and other civilian infrastructure.

A Russian strike carried out between the night of July 1 and the early hours of July 2 killed 31 people in Kyiv. That attack was recorded as one of the deadliest on the capital since the war began in 2022.
