Seoul's Nowon-gu, led by District Mayor Seo Jun-o, has built a train-themed waterfront hub café called Nowon Gyeongchunmaru on top of the Gyeongchun Railway Bridge over the Jungnangcheon River, with official operations set to begin July 15.
Nowon Gyeongchunmaru is a distinctive observation café where visitors can enjoy both the Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail and the Jungnangcheon waterfront. Linked to an extension of the forest trail, it is expected to become a beloved local retreat — a new rest space bridging the woodland path and the riverside.
The café's defining feature is its design: the entire structure is modeled after a train, evoking the feel of setting off on a rail journey. With 38 seats, the café includes a dedicated photo zone where visitors can capture the mood of train travel.
Next to the café, a locomotive cab lets visitors sit in the driver's seat, operate the controls and sound the horn. An open-air waterfront observation deck offers close-up views of the Jungnangcheon scenery and the Gyeongchun Railway Bridge Musical Fountain, providing a dazzling nighttime attraction as well.
Accessibility is another strong point. The café is easy to reach for those strolling the Gyeongchun Line Forest Trail, and an elevator connecting the top of the railway bridge to the riverside walkway below ensures that anyone can visit with ease.
Given its location on a bridge, the café keeps its cooked menu to a minimum, focusing instead on beverages — including Americano, green tea latte and Sunrise (a citrus blend) — along with individually packaged baked goods such as sweet red-bean bread, Dubai Chewy Cookie and madeleines.
Operating hours are 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. during the summer season (March through November) and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during the winter season (December through February). The café is closed every Tuesday, on Labor Day and on the day of major national holidays.
Nowon Gyeongchunmaru is the fourth waterfront hub café the district has developed. Nowon-gu opened its first location, Nowon Dumulmaru, at the confluence of the Jungnangcheon and Danghyeoncheon rivers, featuring an outdoor ramyun zone, a rooftop and a terrace. The second, Danghyeonmaru, followed with a media-glass waterfront observation deck and a crescent-shaped "Moonlight Bridge," creating a waterside atmosphere day and night. The third, Nowon Uimaru, along the Uicheon stream, drew wide acclaim by introducing a stepped reading and listening lounge called "Book Step" and an indoor musical fountain, significantly expanding the district's cultural offerings.
"Nowon Gyeongchunmaru will become a new waterfront destination where visitors can enjoy the night scenery of the Jungnangcheon, the musical fountain and the spirit of train travel all at once," District Mayor Seo said. "We will continue to develop Nowon's waterfront into a space where culture, relaxation and tourism come together, doing our utmost to improve the quality of life for our residents."
