Jongno-gu has completed its "Child-Safe Green Forest" project in the school zone surrounding Changsin Elementary School at 73 Jibong-ro, opening a green commute corridor where students can walk to and from school safely.
The project broke ground in May 2026 and was completed in June, with the goals of improving the commuting environment in the school zone and expanding urban carbon absorption.
The district focused on restoring a safe, healthy walking route for children, who are especially vulnerable to heat waves and fine dust. It invested a total project budget of 100 million won ($64,900) in national and city funds to create an urban forest of approximately 300 square meters.
A green buffer strip between the existing sidewalk and roadway separates pedestrian space from vehicle traffic, and a mix of trees, shrubs and flowering plants creates a green landscape that changes color with the seasons.
The wall of the Doosan apartment building adjoining the rear gate of Changsin Elementary was covered with vertical greenery to add color to the school's surroundings, and five rest benches were installed to give parents waiting for their children and nearby residents a place to sit.
"The Child-Safe Green Forest is a lifestyle-oriented green space designed to help students commute more safely and comfortably," district mayor Yoo Chan-jong said. "We will continue to expand residential green zones centered on school protection areas, building safe commute routes and a more livable city."
