Youth summer science festival 'Junior Doctor' to open July 25

A showcase of science experiences designed to spark young imaginations is set to get underway with the opening of "Junior Doctor."

The Korea Basic Science Institute (KBSI) announced it is accepting applications for the 18th Junior Doctor, which opens July 25.

Junior Doctor is a leading science and culture program hosted and organized by KBSI and sponsored by the city of Daejeon. It gives young people direct access to the advanced research infrastructure and achievements of the Daedeok Research and Development Special Zone, helping them deepen their understanding of science and technology and explore future career paths.

This year's program runs for six weeks, from July 21 through Aug. 28. A total of 35 institutions will take part — including KBSI, government-funded research institutes, public institutions, universities and private organizations within the Daedeok Special Zone — offering a wide range of programs such as experiments and hands-on activities, laboratory tours, science lectures and career mentoring.

Online content, including a science DIY challenge and a virtual science classroom, will also be available so that more young people can engage with science regardless of where they live or their circumstances.

Applicants between the ages of 8 and 16 can register through the Junior Doctor website from 10 a.m. Wednesday to 5 p.m. Tuesday, July 14.

The opening ceremony for the 19th Junior Doctor will be held at 11 a.m. July 24 in the auditorium of KBSI's Daedeok headquarters. Special programs at the ceremony will include a science lecture featuring firsthand stories from researchers and a science magic concert that brings scientific principles to life in an entertaining way.

KBSI will also run an invitation program for young people with fewer opportunities to experience science. About 180 students from 18 schools designated as priority schools under the Daejeon Metropolitan Office of Education's education welfare priority support project will be invited to participate in various programs on July 24 and July 28.

"Junior Doctor is a flagship science experience program where young people can meet real researchers and scientists up close, building their curiosity and imagination about science," a KBSI official said. "We hope this summer's diverse science programs will be a meaningful time for future science and technology talent to nurture their dreams."
