McLaren revives half-century-old road car vision with restored M6GT

McLaren has revived an early road car project first envisioned by its founder, Bruce McLaren — a restoration that traces the company's roots from racing car manufacturer to high-performance road car brand.

McLaren will give the M6GT, restored by McLaren Special Operations (MSO), its world premiere at the 2026 Goodwood Festival of Speed, held at Goodwood House in England from Thursday through Sunday (local time).

The M6GT is based on Bruce McLaren's original project to build the company's first road-going car. The restoration drew on design documents and photographs preserved in the McLaren archive, as well as original body molds discovered in the United Kingdom.

MSO restored existing components and fabricated new ones where needed. Exterior colors, finishes and interior layout were all recreated from period reference materials to preserve the car's historical authenticity. The drivetrain features a 1969 small-block V8 engine and gearbox matched to the original specifications, along with "camel hump" cylinder heads.

The M6GT features aerodynamic styling inspired by the McLaren M6A racing car, a low body profile and a lightweight structure. Bruce McLaren drove the first prototype as his personal daily transport. Concepts introduced by the M6GT — a high-performance mid-mounted engine layout, butterfly doors and a flowing aerodynamic silhouette — carried through to the McLaren F1, which appeared roughly 25 years later.

The restoration focused on staying as close as possible to original manufacturing methods. The team used an M6A racing car chassis and a 1970s M6GT original cockpit, and rebuilt the body using the original molds. The interior reflects period specifications, including a solid walnut gear knob and custom-made seats.

The exterior color, developed specifically for this project, is called "Colnbrook White," named after the area in England where Bruce McLaren conceived his road car ambitions. The combination of a white exterior and green interior was inspired by the livery of the 1966 M2B Formula 1 car.

McLaren has been placing its racing heritage back at the forefront of its identity. The company has announced plans to return to the top class of the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) Hypercar class and the Le Mans 24 Hours in 2027 with the MCL-HY. The M6GT restoration connects the brand's original road car vision with its current motorsport strategy.

John Sims, director of McLaren Special Operations, said the M6GT restoration project was "a precious process and opportunity to bring Bruce McLaren's road car philosophy to life again today," adding that it was "a meaningful undertaking that showcases the early history of McLaren's road car development and the brand's heritage."
