Guro-gu will run a range of humanities programs for local residents at its district public libraries, district mayor Jang In-hong announced.
The district was selected for the "2026 Gil Wie-ui Inmunhak · Jihye Hakgyo," a competitive grant initiative hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and jointly organized by the Korea Arts and Culture Education Service and the Korean Library Association. The program covers humanities education and wisdom school courses. A total of 14 programs will be offered at Guro-gu's public libraries this year.
The selected lineup comprises eight programs under the humanities track and six under the wisdom school track, designed to accommodate adults and middle-aged and older residents as well as children and families.
The humanities track links lectures, hands-on activities and field visits to make the subject approachable and engaging. Topics span the history of civilization through books, coffee and scent; documentary records and photography; culture and the arts; ecology; and hangul and traditional culture — all framed to help participants view everyday subjects through a humanistic lens.
The wisdom school track offers in-depth seminars that explore a single theme at length. Subjects include philosophy and classical texts, tea culture, medicine and pharmacy, and world cultures, with each session structured around questions and discussion to encourage personal reflection.
Through the initiative, the district aims to make humanities more accessible to residents and to strengthen the role of its public libraries as community hubs where children, teenagers, and middle-aged and older adults can learn and connect across generations.
Enrollment schedules and participation details for each program are available on "Jihye-ui Deungdae," the integrated library website for Guro-gu.
"Humanities is a precious asset that broadens our understanding of life and our perspective on community," district mayor Jang said. "I hope the diverse humanities programs at our public libraries give residents a chance to encounter the humanities in their daily lives, ask their own questions and grow."
