Gyeongju completes Gagok Port fishing village renewal project

Gagok Port in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province, has been transformed into a revitalized fishing village where fishing and tourism coexist.

Gyeongju City held a completion ceremony Wednesday for the Gagok Port Fishing Village New Deal 300 project at Gagok Port in Daebong-ri, Gampo-eup, with about 200 attendees including local residents, government officials and guests.

The project was selected through a competitive grant program run by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries and carried out as a village revitalization initiative from 2022 through this year, with a total budget of 8.59 billion won ($5.62 million).

The project upgraded fishing port infrastructure, including reinforcing the eastern breakwater and renovating a shared workspace.

It also created the Gagok Vitality Center and a beachside plaza and improved residential conditions, establishing a multipurpose cultural space for both residents and tourists.

The Gagok Vitality Center includes a seafood market and a rooftop bar with ocean views, providing community-run income-generating spaces.

"We will continue to push forward with various projects to build a sustainable fishing village and boost marine tourism in eastern Gyeongju," Mayor Ju said.
