Songpa-gu in Seoul is building a new dedicated bicycle parking facility near Exit 6 of Seokchon Station to create a safer walking environment for residents, the district announced.
Bicycles parked illegally on sidewalks frequently obstruct pedestrians and pose safety hazards. The problem has been particularly acute around Seokchon Station, a transfer hub for subway Lines 8 and 9, where demand for bicycle parking has grown steadily while existing racks have proven woefully inadequate. A broken mechanical parking system has compounded the problem, leaving bicycles scattered across narrow footpaths.
In response, the district decided to reclaim space from cars and return it to pedestrians and cyclists.
Five on-street parking spaces near Exit 6 — the worst spot for illegal bicycle parking — will be converted into a dedicated bicycle parking area spanning about 55 meters and accommodating roughly 100 bicycles.
Safety fencing and lane-separation barriers will also be installed to keep vehicle traffic and pedestrian routes strictly apart. After gathering resident input, the district plans to move quickly and complete the facility by the end of August.
In addition, the project is expected to complement the district's flagship "Songpa-daero Walking Garden" streetscape initiative. Residents and tourists who arrive by bicycle will be able to park securely at the new facility and then stroll along the garden-lined boulevard to nearby attractions and commercial areas, including Seokchon Lake, Songnidan-gil and Garak Market.
"We expect this bicycle parking facility at Seokchon Station to not only ease the parking shortage but also significantly improve pedestrian satisfaction," Songpa-gu district mayor Seo Gang-seok said. "We will continue enhancing resident convenience and the walking environment to build Songpa into a premium city where both residents and tourists can move around safely and comfortably."
The district runs annual bicycle safety education programs and has introduced related policies such as a Songpa-gu resident bicycle insurance scheme, as part of its broader effort to build eco-friendly transport infrastructure that residents can use with confidence.
