Dongdaemun-gu District Mayor Choi Dong-min conducted an emergency inspection of the Jeongnong and Jangan rainwater pump stations Thursday in preparation for summer downpours and localized heavy rain.
The inspection was organized ahead of the full onset of the monsoon season to verify the operational status of key flood-control facilities and review systems for preventing flood damage and mounting a rapid disaster response.
At the sites, Choi checked the readiness of drainage pumps, the management status of retention basins, the opening and closing of floodgates, and the operation of automated control equipment. He also reviewed on-site duty arrangements and emergency response procedures for heavy rain events.
Rainwater pump stations are a critical line of defense against flooding in low-lying areas during heavy rainfall. The district will conduct regular checks to ensure pumps, floodgates, and electrical and control systems are functioning normally, repairing any problems immediately upon detection.
After completing the field inspection, Choi returned to the district office and visited the flood and storm disaster safety headquarters, where he received briefings on weather conditions, river and drainage facility monitoring, management of flood-prone areas, and emergency duty arrangements. He called for thorough situation management across all fronts.
Choi said the step-by-step response procedures outlined in the flood and storm disaster safety manual must function properly in the field. He directed staff to be fully familiar with their assigned roles before and after weather alerts are issued, and to proactively inspect flood-risk areas and vulnerable facilities.
Dongdaemun-gu operates its flood and storm disaster safety headquarters from May 15 to Oct. 15 each year during the summer flood-control period. The district maintains emergency duty rotations based on weather alert levels and has stepped up continuous inspections of rainwater pump stations and flood-control facilities, as well as monitoring of rivers and drainage systems, to prepare for concentrated downpours.
"As unpredictable localized downpours are becoming more frequent, advance inspections and swift responses are more important than ever," Choi said. "We will manage flood-control facilities without any gaps and maintain a thorough emergency response system centered on the disaster safety headquarters, putting the safety of residents first as we strengthen our disaster response capabilities."
