HD Hyundai teams up with weather data firm to advance AI autonomous navigation

HD Hyundai Marine Solution, the marine solutions arm of HD Hyundai, announced Friday it will work with weather information company Weathernews to advance AI-powered autonomous navigation technology.

The two companies signed a basic business cooperation agreement at Weathernews headquarters in Chiba, Japan, with HD Hyundai Marine Solution CEO Kim Sung-jun and Weathernews CEO Ishibashi Tomohiro in attendance.

Under the agreement, the companies plan to pursue a range of joint initiatives, including securing the first domestic contract for a combined AI route-optimization solution — OSR-OW (Optimum Ship Routeing X OceanWise) — conducting joint marketing campaigns targeting global customers, and expanding digital cooperation. The Weathernews-integrated AI route-optimization solution has been shown to cut fuel consumption by at least 3 percent.

HD Hyundai Marine Solution and Weathernews plan to roll out the AI route-optimization service first to their existing base of about 8,000 customers.

"This agreement is significant in that it successfully establishes the cooperation between our two companies as a concrete business model," Kim said. "We will deliver the best solution for achieving both goals — reducing fuel costs and meeting environmental regulations."
