Incheon to build international eco center in Songdo, signs MOU with UK wetland trust

The Incheon Free Economic Zone Authority (IFEZ) has launched a global cooperation drive to transform Songdo International City into a world-class eco-friendly and sustainable urban hub.

IFEZ signed a memorandum of understanding Monday afternoon with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT), a leading UK wetland conservation organization, at the G-Tower Business Center in Songdo. The MOU covers international expertise-sharing and mutual cooperation for the development of the Songdo International Eco Center.

The agreement aims to strengthen the foundation for international cooperation in building a sustainable city, protecting wildlife habitats and securing biodiversity across the Songdo International City area.

The two organizations plan to work closely together across a range of areas, including international cooperation, academic exchange, environmental education and outreach, and global civic awareness campaigns.

WWT is a leading UK wetland conservation charity recognized worldwide for its expertise. It successfully operates 10 wetland reserves across Britain, including the London Wetland Centre — widely cited as the model for the Songdo International Eco Center.

The agreement was brokered by the East Asian-Australasian Flyway Partnership (EAAFP), which has its international secretariat in Incheon.

Yun Baek-jin, acting head of IFEZ, said the MOU "will mark an important turning point in applying the know-how of the London Wetland Centre — which transformed a disused reservoir into a world-renowned ecological landmark — to the Songdo International Eco Center." He added that IFEZ would continue to strengthen its brand value as a global sustainable and ecological city.
