Driver who crashed into cafe had taken sleeping pills before getting behind the wheel

A compact car attempting to turn right at an intersection plowed into the glass front wall of a cafe, shattering the entrance.

On Wednesday, the Korean National Police Agency posted a video to its official YouTube channel titled '"One Americano, please" — the customer who reversed in.'

In the footage, the compact car struggled to maintain control from the outset, lurching erratically back and forth. The vehicle appeared to stop only after striking a bollard — a traffic barrier installed along the roadside to prevent vehicles from mounting the sidewalk.

Moments later, the car suddenly reversed at high speed with a roar, obliterating the cafe's glass front wall and throwing the interior into chaos.

Officers who responded to the scene checked for casualties and administered a breathalyzer test on the driver, but detected no alcohol.

Police determined that drug-impaired driving was likely, escorted the driver to a police substation and conducted a rapid drug screening test, which came back positive.

The investigation revealed that the driver had taken sleeping pills before getting behind the wheel. The driver was subsequently referred to prosecutors on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act.

Online commenters reacted with dismay. "I can't understand what they were thinking, taking sleeping pills and then driving," one wrote, while another said, "Please, do not drive after taking sleeping pills."
