Seoul's Dongdaemun-gu, led by District Mayor Choi Dong-min, is launching a sweeping public parking facility improvement initiative — with the full-scale repair and reinforcement of the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies parking building as its centerpiece — to provide residents with a safer and more comfortable parking environment.
The repair and reinforcement project, the initiative's flagship effort, was designed to address the building's gradual deterioration since its completion, securing structural safety and improving convenience for users.
The district plans to repair and reinforce key structural elements including deck plates, steel members and exterior wall finishes, while upgrading the vehicle entry and exit alarm system and carrying out a thorough overhaul of the facility. With detailed engineering design already complete and administrative procedures under way, full construction is set to run for approximately four months from Sept. 1 through Dec. 31.
Alongside the main project, the district has consistently advanced a range of public parking environment improvements that residents can feel in their daily lives. In the first half of this year, it completed installation of safety facilities at public parking lots, a full replacement of aging public parking lot signage, and construction of a Hi-Pass dedicated lane at the Cheongnyangni private station street parking lot. Waterproofing work on the rooftop of Dongdap public parking lot and one additional site is also under way, with completion targeted for August.
Through these efforts, the district aims to significantly strengthen facility safety and further enhance user convenience at public parking lots and resident-priority parking zones throughout the area.
"Public parking lots are essential everyday infrastructure that touches residents' daily lives most directly," District Mayor Choi said. "We will continue to proactively and consistently upgrade aging facilities so that every resident can use them with confidence and ease."
