Mapo-gu (district mayor Yoo Dong-gyun) held an appointment ceremony Thursday at the district office's main conference room, officially designating 16 guest reporters to cover local news for the district newsletter "Naegojang Mapo" (My Hometown Mapo) from a resident's perspective.
The guest reporters are a community-participation journalism unit that contributes to the production of the district newsletter, bringing news from across Mapo-gu.
Over the years, the reporters have covered local festivals, lifestyle information and resident events, filling the pages of "Naegojang Mapo" with stories told from the community's point of view.
Last year, their contributions included pieces such as "Mapo Ablaze with Festival Energy," "Evening Schools Lighting Up Mapo's Nights" and "Meeting Local Artists at Mapo Arts Center" — community-focused articles that kept residents informed about life in the district.
Twenty-five people applied in this round of recruitment. The final 16 were selected through a comprehensive evaluation covering their familiarity with and interest in "Naegojang Mapo," motivation, writing ability and grasp of subject matter.
The newly appointed reporters range in age from their 20s to their 70s. They come from a broad range of backgrounds — including homemakers, bank employees, children's book authors and social workers — and are expected to bring varied perspectives to coverage of life across Mapo-gu.
The reporters will serve two-year terms, filing one story per month and attending bimonthly editorial meetings. They will receive a fee for each article accepted for publication.
At the ceremony, the district presented appointment certificates and press credentials before sharing plans for how the program will operate going forward.
"The people who know a neighborhood best are the ones who live there," district mayor Yoo said. "I hope the diverse perspectives and experiences of our guest reporters will enrich 'Naegojang Mapo' and serve as a bridge connecting residents with the district administration."
