Gallery Chaeyul in Gangnam-gu, Seoul, is hosting "Where Time Lingers," a solo exhibition by Kim Si-jong, through Sept. 2.
Kim has built a painterly visual world in which different times and spaces overlap, working at the boundary between photography and painting. He hand-paints the fabric backdrops, then photographs them using a combination of natural and artificial light — a process that moves beyond photography's documentary function to produce images in which time appears to accumulate, much as it does in painting.
The new works on view incorporate furniture from Gallery Chaeyul as objects within the compositions. Kim treats the furniture as a medium through which the traces of life and the passage of time reside, using it to explore how the value of a finite life carries forward through relationships and memory.
