Jungnang-gu is screening free movies at the heat shelter in the first-floor lobby of its district office through Aug. 21, giving residents a place to escape the relentless summer heat.
One film will be shown each weekday starting at 2:30 p.m., and any resident using the shelter is welcome to watch.
The district is also extending the operating hours of the multivision display in the first-floor lobby — from the previous cutoff of 6:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. — to match the shelter's expanded schedule. During the extended hours, the screen will broadcast district news, lifestyle and safety information, and heat-wave response tips, giving shelter visitors both entertainment and practical guidance.
The district has been strengthening its heat-response measures in anticipation of a prolonged heat wave, expanding cooling shelter operations and adding heat-reduction facilities. It is now running 153 heat shelters — three more than last year — and 12 safe overnight accommodations for low-income, housing-vulnerable elderly residents, two more than last year. When a heat-wave advisory is in effect, neighborhood community centers extend their hours into the evening and through weekends and public holidays.
The district also operates 197 shaded cooling canopies, cooling-fog systems and Jungnang Ongdalsaem water-mist stations. Starting in July, it set up a mobile outdoor cooling shelter equipped with air conditioning near Exit 2 of Junghwa Station.
"With the heat wave continuing, the health and safety of our residents is the top priority," district mayor Ryu Gyeong-gi said. "I hope the heat shelter becomes a comfortable resting place where anyone can take a break from the heat, and we will do our utmost to help residents get through the summer safely."
