A civic festival celebrating the spirit of Korea's independence movement will be held at Seodaemun Prison History Hall and the area around Independence Gate — two of the country's most iconic sites of the independence struggle.
Seodaemun-gu announced it will hold the "2026 Seodaemun Independence and Democracy Festival" from Aug. 15 to Aug. 16 at Seodaemun Prison History Hall and Seodaemun Independence Park to mark the 81st anniversary of Liberation Day. Last year's edition drew 150,000 visitors.
Seodaemun, home to Independence Gate and Seodaemun Prison History Hall, is a living symbol of Korea's independence movement. Countless independence activists were imprisoned here in the fight for the nation's freedom, and the site has since become a place where citizens can directly experience the values of history and democracy. Seodaemun-gu has long used this historic asset as the backdrop for an annual Liberation Day festival blending performances, exhibitions and hands-on activities.
This year's festival is organized around the theme "Seodaemun United in the Light of Liberation." The program has been expanded across performances, exhibitions and citizen participation activities so that visitors of all ages — from children to seniors — can connect naturally with the spirit of the independence movement and the meaning of Liberation Day.
On Liberation Day, Aug. 15, a commemorative ceremony and celebratory concert will begin at 7 p.m. Following congratulatory remarks from distinguished guests and an address by Seodaemun-gu District Mayor Park Woon-ki, the Seodaemun District Women's Choir will perform, followed by sets from invited singers Park Jeong-hyeon and Son Seung-yeon, sharing the joy of liberation with the public.
A wide range of programs will allow citizens to engage directly with the meaning of the independence movement. These include a guided prison tour with expert commentary, a Liberation Road Challenge, an Independence Reading Challenge and a Liberation Stamp Rally, along with more than 30 hands-on activity booths for families.
The festival's energy will extend to the nearby Yeongcheon Market. In conjunction with the Independence and Democracy Festival, Seodaemun-gu will hold the "815 Independence Dinner Yeongcheon Festival" from Aug. 15 to Aug. 16 at Dongnimmun Culture Park and the Yeongcheon Market area. The event will feature food stalls showcasing the market's signature dishes, celebratory performances, hands-on activities, and cashback and prize events for customers — allowing festival-goers to enjoy both the history and culture festival and a traditional market in one visit.
Cultural performances set against the historic backdrop will also run throughout the festival. On the auxiliary stage in front of Cell Block 12 at Seodaemun Prison History Hall, visitors can watch a vocal recital by Yonsei University students, a traditional Korean music performance by Chugye University for the Arts, a popera show and a taekwondo performance. Inside Cell Block 12, a classical music concert will offer a uniquely resonant experience within the historic space.
The exhibition program has also been significantly expanded. The permanent exhibition at the women's prison wing will use hologram technology to vividly convey the lives and spirit of female independence activists, while Cell Block 10 will host a special exhibition developed in partnership with the National Folk Museum of Korea, introducing the stories of various independence movement figures.
A lenticular exhibition installed in Independence Park will visually express the joy of liberation through an effect in which the expressions of independence activists shift to ones of elation as viewers move past. The use of cutting-edge display technology is intended to bring younger generations closer to history.
During the festival, from Aug. 15 to Aug. 16, Seodaemun Prison History Hall will be open free of charge from 9:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Visitors are welcome to tour the history hall and freely enjoy the performances, exhibitions and activity programs.
"Liberation is not a chapter of the past — it is the starting point of the freedom and democracy we enjoy today," District Mayor Park said. "I hope Seodaemun, which holds Independence Gate and Seodaemun Prison within it, will offer citizens a meaningful occasion to reflect on the noble spirit of the independence movement and carry its values forward together with future generations."
