Lee Kang-in holds Atletico Madrid unveiling in Seoul in 'unprecedented' honor

Lee Kang-in, who recently joined Spanish football powerhouse Atletico Madrid, will hold his official club unveiling in Seoul.

Coupang Play announced Sunday that the unveiling will take place at the 2026 Coupang Play Series event. The ceremony is set for 8 p.m. Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium, where Atletico Madrid and Manchester City will meet for the first time in three years, with Lee being formally presented as the club's newest signing.

"Holding the unveiling ceremony in front of Korean fans rather than at the club's home stadium is unprecedented treatment in the club's history," Coupang Play said.

It added that the event reflects "Coupang Play's sincere wish to share Lee Kang-in's new beginning with fans, combined with the club's desire to welcome their new ace first in his hometown."

Club director David Villa, the legendary striker who played for Atletico Madrid during his playing career, is set to attend the ceremony and present Lee with a special jersey.

Lee moved from Spanish club Mallorca to Paris Saint-Germain in July 2023. This summer he joined Atletico Madrid in a deal worth 35 million euros ($40.3 million) plus 5 million euros in add-ons, for a total of 40 million euros.

The transfer fee ranks second in history among Korean players, behind the 50 million euros Kim Min-jae commanded when he moved from Napoli to Bayern Munich in 2023.

Atletico Madrid handed Lee the club's iconic No. 7 shirt, signaling high expectations for the South Korean midfielder.

The No. 7 jersey was previously worn by Antoine Griezmann, now at Orlando City, during his celebrated years at the club.

At a press conference Saturday, Lee said, "Atletico Madrid is a team that fights for the league title every year. I chose this move because I felt that coming here would push me to work harder and improve, and that we could achieve great results and lift many trophies together."
