Yangcheon-gu will select 180 scholarship recipients for 2026 and award a total of 140 million won ($98,700) to nurture future leaders in the community and expand educational opportunities for students, the district announced Monday.
This year, the district increased the number of middle school students selected under the general scholarship category by 10 compared to last year, bringing the total number of recipients to 180.
Applications are open across three categories: general scholarships for middle and high school students and university students, academic excellence scholarships for high school students, and special talent scholarships for elementary, middle and high school students. Eligible applicants must have been registered as residents of Yangcheon-gu for at least one year as of Monday and meet the category-specific requirements.
The general scholarship targets students from households with income at or below 100 percent of the median income standard — or, for university students, within income support bracket 5 of the Korea Student Aid Foundation. The academic excellence scholarship is open to students who ranked in the top 20 percent of their class in the previous semester. Under the high school credit system, applicants must have earned an A rating in at least 80 percent of absolute-graded subjects and averaged within grade 1.42 in relative-graded subjects; under the nine-tier grading system, applicants must average within grade 2.75 across subjects.
The special talent scholarship is open to students who placed in the top three at a metropolitan- or provincial-level competition or higher in the arts, sports or science fields, provided the event was directly hosted or organized by a government body, a metropolitan or provincial government, a city or provincial education office, a public institution, a special corporation or a legally designated association.
Scholarship amounts vary by school level: elementary and middle school students receive 300,000 won, high school students receive 600,000 won, and university students receive between 500,000 won and a maximum of 1.8 million won.
Applications are accepted from Aug. 31 through Sept. 18. General scholarship applicants must apply at the community service center in their residential district, while academic excellence and special talent applicants apply through their school. However, students attending schools outside Yangcheon-gu who are applying for the academic excellence or special talent categories must obtain a principal's recommendation letter and submit it directly to the community service center in their residential district.
All applications will be reviewed by the scholarship fund management deliberation committee, with final selections announced in November and scholarships disbursed in early December. For more information, contact the Yangcheon-gu Office's education division or visit the district's official website.
Since 2017, the district has consistently supported its scholarship program, awarding 456.01 million won to 703 students over nine years to develop local talent and broaden access to education.
