Daewoo Engineering & Construction is joining forces with global engineering firm Arup to pursue the reconstruction contract for the Mokdong 8 complex in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul. The company plans to apply supertall structural design technology to the development, planned at up to 49 stories and 180 meters in height, to boost both safety and design competitiveness.
Daewoo Engineering & Construction announced Monday that it would enter a strategic collaboration with Arup for the Mokdong 8 complex reconstruction project. The builder said it intends to draw on Arup's experience with supertall projects to propose a residential complex with strong structural safety and design appeal.
Headquartered in London, Arup is a global engineering firm operating in more than 100 countries. The firm has contributed structural design and engineering work to projects including the 679-meter Merdeka 118 in Malaysia, the 632-meter Shanghai Tower in China, and Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
Arup holds expertise in structural system optimization for high-rise buildings, wind-load analysis and performance-based seismic design. Daewoo Engineering & Construction said it will use that expertise to review the optimal structural system for the Mokdong 8 complex and propose measures to ensure structural resilience against earthquakes and strong winds.
The company also aims to create a skyline that reinforces the complex's symbolic presence while securing structural stability, with the goal of establishing it as a landmark development representing the Mokdong area.
"Through collaboration with Arup, which possesses world-class supertall structural engineering capabilities, we will go beyond a simple reconstruction and further strengthen our technological competitiveness to build a next-generation residential complex that defines Mokdong," a Daewoo Engineering & Construction official said. "We will propose a differentiated landmark complex that prioritizes safety while harmonizing with the urban landscape."
