Man in his 70s flees after hitting motorcycles, wall — tests positive for 6 drugs

A man in his 70s who struck two parked motorcycles and a wall before fleeing the scene has been taken into custody. He showed no signs of intoxication but tested positive for six controlled substances in a preliminary drug screening.

The Seoul Gangbuk Police Station is questioning the man, identified only as A, on charges of failing to take required action after a traffic accident under the Road Traffic Act, according to Yonhap and other media outlets Monday.

A is accused of hitting two parked motorcycles and a parking lot wall with his vehicle in an alley in Mia-dong, Gangbuk-gu, on Friday, then fleeing the scene.

Police responded after a resident reported that a driver had struck motorcycles and a parking lot wall and appeared to be drunk. A was apprehended about 800 meters from the scene.

A preliminary drug test returned positive results for six substances, including zolpidem and cannabis. No signs of alcohol consumption were found. A told investigators he had taken medication prescribed by a dermatologist, according to police.

Police said they will review whether to apply drug-impaired driving charges against A once the National Forensic Service completes a detailed analysis.
