Coupang Inc hits record estimated July payments of W6.11tr

Coupang Inc's estimated card payments hit an all-time high of 6.11 trillion won ($4.28 billion) last month, according to data released Thursday.

Research firm WiseApp·Retail, which estimates payment volumes by sampling Korean credit and debit card transactions, said the figure was up 6 percent from 5.76 trillion won in the same month last year.

Coupang Inc's estimated payments had declined following a personal data breach disclosed in late November last year, but the company staged a recovery over the following months before setting a new record in July.

Coupang Eats also posted a record high, with estimated payments reaching 1.18 trillion won in July, a 21 percent increase from a year earlier.

WiseApp said the figures exclude payments made via bank transfer, cash or gift certificates and do not reflect each company's actual sales.
