Yeongdeungpo-gu has significantly expanded neighborhood heat-relief facilities to help residents cope with the record-breaking heat wave, District Mayor Jo Yu-jin said.
The district plans to strengthen its heat response by expanding access to water, shade and rest spaces in heavily used residential areas, including parks and the Anyangcheon riverside trail.
The district first expanded eco-friendly, water-based cooling facilities. Gangmaul Children's Park, previously home to aging playground equipment, has been transformed into a new water play area serving the Dangsan neighborhood.
Eight cooling fog units and mist bars — which lower ambient temperatures by spraying fine water particles — have been installed at the park, allowing families to beat the heat close to home.
Eight additional mist bars were also installed along the Daebangcheon Green Forest Trail, making the walking path more comfortable for residents even during intense heat.
The district also sharply increased the number of shade structures to help residents escape direct sunlight. Five smart shade canopies and 10 standard shade canopies were newly installed along the Anyangcheon trail, while 18 standard canopies were added across five major parks, including Yeongdeungpo Park — bringing the total number of new shade structures to 33 and expanding rest areas for residents who walk and exercise outdoors.
Five smart rest shelters are now operating at Singil Neighborhood Park, Yeongil Children's Park, Yangpyeong Retention Basin, the Mullae-dong Flower Garden and the rooftop garden of the district office annex, allowing residents to use the parks comfortably even during the heat wave.
The district has also newly designated the first- and second-floor exhibition halls and lecture rooms of Yeongdeungpo Arts Hall as heat-relief shelters, giving residents a place to rest.
"As the heat wave drags on, we will create an environment where residents can safely escape the heat close to where they live," District Mayor Jo said. "We will continue adding a variety of heat-relief facilities throughout residential areas to prevent heat-related harm."
